SWD-Lure Trap

Monitoring

Biology of the target organism:
The spotted wing drosophila (SWD) is approximately 3 mm big and belongs to the family of fruit and vinegar flies (Drosophilae). Domestic fruit flies are often associated with damaged, overripe or rotting fruits and vegetables. This invasive species however, is able to cut through healthy ripening fruits, while they are still on the plant, and deposit its eggs with an adapted serrated ovipositor. The eggs are milky white with two filamentous breathing structures. Already after one day the larvae hatch from the eggs. Larvae feed on and pupate within the inside of the fruit or berry.
As the development time is very short, multiple generations of spotted wing flies may occur per season (ideal development temperatures around 25C°).

Fruit Crops
The spotted wing fly prefer dark berries but affect all berrylike and soft skinned fruits: cherry, strawberry, blackberry, raspberry, gooseberry, blackcurrant, elderberry, plums, peaches, nectarines, apricots, figs, kiwi, grapes, bird cherry, laurel cherry among other berry-types.

Pattern of Damage
Set up the lure trap before SWD flies invade the crops. At the latest, set up lure trap, when fruits begin to change colour.
From July/September increased infestation quickly causes healthy looking fruits, which are still attached to the plant to decay from the inside and collapse. Inside several legless maggots may be found. Less invaded fruits my appear healthy on the outside. Frequently a secondary infection by fungi or bacteria occurs. This can result in a 100% damage.

Monitoring
To reduce infestation, multiple SWD-Lure Traps should be placed with an interval of 2-3 m in close proximity of (or in case of infestation directly into) the crop fields. The lure traps should be mounted in the same height as the fruit. The luring liquid should be exchanged after 4 weeks at the latest. Do not discard the luring liquid into the culture or onto compost, but pour it down the drain. Infested fruits should not be disposed in the compost, but in domestic waste.
